Global Talent Visa

The Global Talent Initiative was first introduced by the Australian government in December 2018. As part of this initiative the Global Talent Independent program, which has since been renamed as the Global Talent Visa Program, was launched in November 2019. The purpose of this program is to attract highly talented individuals with entrepreneurial ideas and cutting-edge skills within selected industry sectors. In 2019-2020 migration year the program delivered 4,109 places against a planning level of 5,000. For 2020-2021 migration year the planning level has been significantly increased to 15,000 places and all applications are fast tracked.

2019-2020 Statistics

In 2019-2020 migration year 6,417 applications were made in total and the grant rate reached 99.5% with 2,448 application still remaining under consideration as at 30 June 2020. Out of the 4,109 places granted, 3,344 were allocated to applicants who were already in Australia when they applied and 765 were given to applicants who were outside Australia at the time of their application.

The distribution of successful applicants within the target industry sectors was as follows:

Eligibility

On 4 September 2020, the Australian Government announced the new global business and talent attraction taskforce to attract exceptionally talented individuals and high yield businesses. The initial focus will be on key sectors of advanced manufacturing, financial services, health and life sciences.

The list of eligible industry sectors include the following:

  • Agricultural Technology
  • Financial Technology
  • Medical Technology
  • Energy and Mining Technology
  • Space and Advanced Manufacturing
  • Information and Communication Technology
  • Cyber Security
  • Quantum Computing
  • Advanced Digital and Data Science

Candidates should be able to earn more than the high income threshold. This is currently set at AUD $153,600, but it is adjusted on an annual basis.

More importantly, applicants must provide evidence that they:

  • are internationally recognised and have current outstanding achievements in their field of expertise
  • will be an asset to Australia, in their area of expertise
  • have no difficulty obtaining employment in Australia or becoming established in their field
  • have a nomination from an Australian organisation or individual that are prominent in the same field of expertise

Alternatively, places may be available to Masters and PhD students who can demonstrate their exceptional talent and internati​onal recognition.
